June, 2010 FACTS
AND FIGURES FROM ARM In the April 4, 2010, edition of THE LOOKOUT, Marcy Kennedy wrote, “On
January 27, 1975, 18-year-old Maury Davis slit the throat of a
54-year-old woman without provocation.
Less than 24 hours later, ‘I didn’t even know that old lady,’ Although he went to jail an unrepentant murderer, meth addict, drug
dealer and burglar, eight years later he came out a Christian devoted
to spreading the gospel. He’s
now the senior minister of the 6,000-member Ms. Kennedy continues, “In 1999, Charles Wesley Roache and an
accomplice were on the run after murdering a 22-year-old man.
When their car broke down, they entered the home of Earl and
Cora Phillips, both in their 70s, and tried to steal their vehicle.
The situation ended with Roache shooting the couple, their son and
daughter-in-law, and their granddaughter, killing them all.
Roache was given the death penalty, but after his arrest, he repented
and became a Christian. He
didn’t fight his conviction. Instead,
he told his lawyers he didn’t want to put the families of his
victims through any more pain. Although
eternally forgiven by God, he accepted the temporal consequences for
his actions and was executed on October 22, 2004.” God forgave David for murdering Bathsheba’s husband (1 Sam. 11:15),
and He forgave Paul for “persecuting
the Way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and
women” (Acts. 22:4). He
is not just the God of David and Paul; He is the merciful God who has
looked upon all our sins and has forgiven us as well.
Thank you for your faith in Him, and your willingness to take His
compassion to prisoners.
